Compost Happens
Make a big pile of
leaves or garden and kitchen waste and eventually you'll get rotted plant
matter, or compost. But the mixture might end up smelly
and slimy if it's too moist or contains too much nitrogen. Better to
follow these simple guidelines: layer nitrogen-rich materials, such as
vegetable
scraps and fresh grass clippings, with carbon-rich materials, such as
dried leaves and straw. Cover the pile and keep it
moist. Turn the pile with a pitchfork every
few
weeks
to ensure all the material is breaking down at the same time.
Commercial rolling or tumbling composters make the process
easier. Instead of turning heavy compost by hand, you can roll or tumble
to mix the
materials. Composters are easy to load, help maintain the proper moisture
levels, and keep the pile contained. But in the end, remember that composting
is simply nature's way of returning
nutrients to the soil. View
